ObjectiveTo investigate the correlation of serum total homocysteine and T lymphocyte subsets in patients with lower extremity atherosclerosis. Methods96 patients (group LEAD) with lower extremity atherosclerotic disease (LEAD) and 100 patients with other diseases of lower limb artery (control group) were included in the study. The serum homocysteine (Hcy) level and T lymphocyte subsets in the two groups were examined and compared. The correlation between serum Hcy level and T lymphocyte subsets in LEAD patients was analyzed. ResultsThe Hcy, CD3+T cells, CD3+CD4+ T cells and CD3+CD4+/CD3+CD8+ ratio in group LEAD were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.01). The CD3+CD8+ T cells were significantly lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). The correlation analysis shows that, the level of serum Hcy in LEAD patients was positively correlated with CD3+, CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD4+/CD3+CD8+ (R=0.356, 0.568, P<0.01). There is a positive correlation with the blood CD3+CD4+/CD3+CD8+ (R=0.526, P<0.01). ConclusionLEAD patients have a disorder of immune function, and their CD4+T cell abnormalities are associated with the onset of LEAD. Hcy can affect the occurrence of atherosclerosis by affecting CD4+ cells.
